Vincenzo Montella concedes Fiorentina didn’t have their best game against Milan, but “we could’ve avoided defeat.”

The Viola were beaten 2-0 at the Stadio Artemio Franchi by Philippe Mexes and Mario Balotelli goals.

“We certainly didn’t play with quality, while Milan did well to take their chances and we did not,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“With a little more intelligence and smarts, we could’ve avoided defeat. I told my players not to go into the defensive wall if they were afraid of getting a ball in the face. I’ll need a word with them.”

Napoli won away to Catania this evening, so Fiorentina’s hopes of catching them in third are evaporating fast.

“I saw the team was mentally tired, so I said we were targeting third to push them on. I wanted them to play with the same grit as before.

“It’s important to keep our form up so we can prepare as well as possible for the Coppa Italia Final.”

Alessandro Matri faced his old club and returned to his old form too, missing a couple of sitters.

“He has the movement of a striker and always creates chances. It can happen to miss a few opportunities, he just needs to stay calm and I’m sure he will break through.”
