Juventus general manager Beppe Marotta said Carlos Tevez is not playing for Argentina due to “non-football situations.”

The striker is Serie A top scorer with 18 goals this season, but is consistently ignored by Argentina boss Alejandro Sabella.

“Clearly Tevez is a man and therefore aspires to wear the jersey of his country, especially at a World Cup,” Marotta told Sky Sport Italia.

“He deserves it for his talents, but the Coach makes his decisions. I think it is down to non-football situations we don’t know.

“As a professional, Tevez accepts this decision with disappointment, but understanding, realising he can gain satisfaction elsewhere in his career.”

Juve are top of Serie A and won the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final 1-0 away to Lyon. The second leg kicks off tonight at 20.05 UK time (19.05 GMT), click here for the line-ups.

“Both tournaments are priorities for us, as when Juventus enter a competition they have to go all the way. We will honour this tournament in the best way possible, especially as the Final will be in our own stadium.

“In Serie A we are in a head-to-head with Roma now and will push all the way to win. We have to be proud of what we’re achieving this season.”

Marotta was asked about Atletico Madrid’s victory over Barcelona this week, knocking them out of the Champions League quarter-finals.

“Without doubt they prove that football is not just the value of the players, but also the winning mentality and motivation. Atletico showed against Barcelona how motivated they were and always came first to every ball.

“Barcelona’s performance suggested an era is coming to an end and they need to renew. There are always cycles in football and they keep coming round.”
