“Yes, today is a very important day for Zanetti and I'm very happy for him,” Thohir told journalists at Malpensa airport.
“I'm looking forward to working with him in future at club level. The final decisions will be made at the end of the season.”
Zanetti is due to hang up his boots just shy of his 41st birthday after 19 years at Inter and will join the club staff.
Thohir also commented on Coach Mazzarri after the Milan Derby defeat left their Europa League qualification in doubt.
“Mazzarri will remain. He still has a contract and I want to respect that. I understand the criticism. I also felt unhappy but we need to give him a chance because it's important that we start the new season with stability so we can grow with sustainability.”
President Thohir is heading to London next week and was asked whether it was for a meeting with Chelsea over Fernando Torres.
“No, I'm going to London for other meetings.”
