Inter’s Diego Milito believes the Nerazzurri could have challenged for a Champions League place this season.

The Argentine striker, who is expected to leave the club in the summer, thinks the San Siro side have thrown away far too many points this term, particularly at home.

However, he maintains that Walter Mazzarri’s team have had a positive season on the whole, though he regrets that he hasn’t been able to play much part in it.

“It’s been a difficult season for me, because I definitely wanted to play more often,” Milito told Inter Channel.

“Until December I was looking to get in shape after a year of not playing but then, just as I was getting back to my peak, I got another injury.

“These additional three months out were a real psychological blow. I tried to be as calm as possible and in January I made my return in Udine.

“I tried to do my best as always and every time I played, even if just for a few minutes, I gave my all.

“In terms of the team it has been a positive season. They might have had higher ambitions but there have also been difficulties and a change of ownership.

“We are happy though because we have at least got Inter into the Europa League, even though we have dropped a lot of points, especially at home.

“It’s a shame. With a few more points we could have challenged for the Champions League.”

Milito then went on to comment on the Nerazzurri’s future prospects and was also asked whether he would be watching the World Cup in Brazil.

“It’s a question of time. Inter have chosen to bring in players who are talented, but also young and who can improve.

“I think it’s the right way to go, even though at Inter you are always expected to win.

“I’m speaking about players like Kovacic, Icardi and Jonathan, who has had a great season.

“I will definitely watch the World Cup, my Argentina can do very well. I hope they can do it.”
