Neymar has reflected on ‘realising a boyhood dream’ to play at the World Cup, as he asserts he is not looking for individual glory.

The Barcelona striker is seen as the competition hosts’ main source of inspiration and hope this summer, as Brazil prepare to open proceedings this evening against Croatia.

“As Scolari says, the time has come, the time that we Brazilians have all anticipated and particularly us players,” Neymar has told reporters beforehand.

“And we the players hope that the last day goes by very quickly. I am anxious, of course. But also I’m extremely happy of being where I am today. So I really hope I can help my team in the best possible way to fulfil the dream of us players, Brazilians, to win the World Cup.

“I remember in 2002 when I was 10 and I watched on TV all the matches when we won the World Cup.

“Ronaldo was my idol and now I will be going to the field – I have realised a dream from when I was a child.”

The 22-year-old former Santos star was asked of Brazil’s push towards what would be a sixth world title.

“What I want most is just that – the Cup, because it would not make sense to be the best player in the tournament or score the most goals if you do not win the title.

“My goal is the collective, I am not looking for individual accolades, and I am ready to help my teammates in every way.

“And then the main player of the national team must be the public, because we are playing at home and they must give us that final push.”
