The Barcelona star was ruled out of the World Cup after a knee in the back from Colombia’s Juan Camilo Zuniga left him with a fractured third lumbar vertebra.

Today Neymar left the Brazilian training ground in an air ambulance so he can recuperate at his home on the coast.

“I can confirm the fracture of a vertebra, but fortunately the bone marrow was untouched, so Neymar’s career and normal every day life will not be compromised,” explained medic Jose Luiz Runco.

“His recovery will take between three and six weeks, so we expect him to be sidelined for 40-45 days.”

Neymar will not require surgery, but is asked to wear a special bust to immobilise his back and help it to heal.

“I have lost the dream of playing in a World Cup Final, but not the dream of winning the trophy,” he wrote on his Twitter account.
