Chievo have been dealt a blow at the start of the summer transfer window with the resignation of their sporting director Giovanni Sartori.

Sartori has spent the last 22 years with the Gialloblu and, alongside President Luca Campedelli, is credited with constructing the teams that various Coaches through the years have managed to keep afloat in Serie A.

However, reports quickly emerged this morning that he was considering a break from the game and have been followed up by the club’s own official confirmation.

“Words are not enough to explain how important and crucial you have been for me,” Campedelli is quoted as saying on Chievo’s website.

“This is not goodbye but an arrivederci. See you soon.”

Campedelli inherited the club’s presidency from his late father in 1992 and one of his first actions was to promote former player Sartori to sporting director.

Sartori is believed to be just after a rest from the game and is already speculated as in line for a return to the Flying Donkeys in the future.

Chievo’s final signings during Sartori’s reign look to be Inter’s Cristiano Biraghi and Francesco Bardi.
