Empoli have formally withdrawn their support for Carlo Tavecchio. “His comments are too far from our ethical principles.”

Several Serie A clubs have now abandoned Tavecchio and called for him to quit as a candidate for the FIGC Presidency following racist comments last week.

“I maintain it is right to no longer support the candidacy of LND President Carlo Tavecchio as Federation President, as his recent and well-known comments are too far from our ethical and sporting principles,” announced Empoli President Fabrizio Corsi.

“Also, these comments put us in a critical position on the international stage that at this moment Italian football will not benefit from.”

Other Serie A sides to have pulled out of backing Tavecchio are Fiorentina” data-scaytid=”20″>Fiorentina, Cagliari” data-scaytid=”21″>Cagliari, Sampdoria” data-scaytid=”22″>Sampdoria, Sassuolo” data-scaytid=”23″>Sassuolo and Cesena.

Juventus” data-scaytid=”25″>Juventus and Roma were originally the only two top flight clubs to support his rival, Demetrio Albertini.

The election is on August 11 and technically Tavecchio still has enough votes to win, as the Lega Serie B, Lega Pro and LND are all behind him.
