The Hornets were second in the English Championship when the Coach decided to walk away, tending his resignation on August 31.

“I made the decision to resign,” Sannino told Tuttomercatoweb. “It was a wonderful experience given to me by an exceptional club patron like Pozzo.

“The club can continue its dream of winning the Championship. The club was extraordinary with me, but at this moment I needed to be back in Italy.

“There is nothing else to think about, no calculations or hidden messages. Do I have the Bologna job lined up? No, there’s nothing in it.”

There had been reports of run-ins with players who were unaccustomed to his demanding management style.

Sannino made his Serie A debut on the bench of Siena, a club that went into liquidation this summer.

“Siena is part of my football life and it’s a shame it ended this way. I think Siena can rise again from this situation and quickly climb the levels to get back to where they belong.”

Another of his former clubs, Palermo, are back in the top flight this season under volcanic President Maurizio Zamparini.
“Palermo live on enthusiasm from the fans and won the Serie B title, so I hope they can do important things.

“I still have Palermo in my heart and hope Beppe Iachini can catalyse this enthusiasm to make for a great season.”
