The former striker is in the San Siro hotseat this season having replaced former teammate Clarence Seedorf.

However, for Van Basten, Seedorf’s example should be taken when assessing Inzaghi’s potential this term.

“When Clarence Seedorf started his job at Milan, I thought that it would be very difficult to do well,” the former Netherlands international has told Sky Italia.

“Milan is a great club and you must have a bit of experience. You can’t assume that if you were a great player, you’ll also be a great manager.

“It’s an altogether different discipline. And the same thing is true for Inzaghi, yes.”

The Dutch manager has recently opted for a demotion at AZ Alkmaar because the job was causing him health problems.

The same happened to his former manager Arrigo Sacchi a few years ago.

“A few years ago, I always thought that I would be first team manager in a club. But now I’ve made a step back.

“I must say that I feel better, calmer and with less responsibility. A manager’s life is complicated, difficult, stressful. That’s why a couple of months ago I chose to be assistant manager.

“I wasn’t sleeping well and this led me to have other physical problems. It was not due to my heart, but I was just too nervous.

“I’ve always been an emotive person. I’ve always felt the adrenaline of the game when I was a player, but as a manager it was worse.

“When you don’t sleep, days are just too long. In the end you only live once and we should try to have a nice life.”
