Russia Coach Fabio Capello said he is “offended” by ex-assistant manager Christian Panucci’s accusations of “shameful” treatment.
As is well known by now, Capello and his staff have not been paid for months and faced questions in Parliament on results.
Now Panucci has gone to La Gazzetta dello Sport to explain why he walked out on the job.
“When we came back from the World Cup in Brazil, I was promised a renewal many times and we never moved from talk to facts. I even worked without a contract, but at the end I said enough. And to think I turned down a job as Coach for this...
“Listen, I thank Capello for the opportunity he gave me, but he behaved shamefully with me and all of his Italian staff members. I will say it to his face the first time I get to see him.
“A great Coach should defend his men and he did not do that.”
Panucci was also referring to fitness coach Massimo Neri, who was also left without pay by the Russian Federation.
Capello was a guest on Sky Sport Italia ahead of Roma’s Champions League game with CSKA Moscow and asked about Panucci’s comments.
“I am offended and I have no further desire to comment on what he said. Will I respond face to face? We’ll see.”
