There are more calls for goal-line technology after Davide Astori reveals the referee over-ruled his assistant in Udinese-Roma.

Serie A have plans to introduce goal-line technology from the 2015-16 season, although there are still debates over cost and implementation, so that is far from guaranteed.

Serie A have plans to introduce goal-line technology from the 2015-16 season, although there are still debates over cost and implementation, so that is far from guaranteed.

The problem arose again in today’s early kick-off, as Astori’s header bounced off the underside of the bar and back off the ground.

“I think the referee always has the last word and I thought he saw it well,” Astori told Sky Sport Italia at half-time.

“Maresca, the goal-line referee, said it wasn’t a goal, but Guida took on a big responsibility and over-ruled him.”

This will only further stoke controversy, as the goal-line official is meant to be in the best possible position to judge whether the ball has gone in.

The fact the referee completely ignored his view makes the incident even more contentious.

It is also the second ‘phantom goal’ to have involved Udinese this season, as they were defeated 2-0 by Milan in November.

In that case, Adil Rami’s goal was judged to have been on the line.
