“Palermo are in good shape and accustomed to playing open football. Paradoxically, these two things actually favour us,” smiled the Coach in a Press conference.

“We must win via our style of football and be more ferocious than the other team. There can be no excuses on that.

“Considering our possession and how much we dominate opponents, we don’t get the results to reflect that. We have many opportunities, even without shots on target, so we need to improve that. I like our consistency and the overall approach, though.”

Gomez has scored one goal in nine months and continued to miss sitters, including a saved penalty in Tuesday’s shock defeat to Parma.

“I expect him to not worry about apologising to everyone and instead focus on getting angry,” advised Montella. “Who will take the next penalty? We’ll see.”

The Viola are reinforcing with Diamanti making his move from Guangzhou Evergrande official on loan with option to buy.

“I like him because he has determination as well as the characteristics to help us. He is a leader and we need someone like him. Diamanti won’t be available tomorrow, but I hope to have him ready for Chievo.”

Norberto Neto has been dropped after refusing to sign a new contract, but won’t even be on the bench tomorrow.

“He injured himself in training yesterday, slightly dislocating his shoulder, so I think it’ll be a while before he’s available again.”

Stefan Savic and Gonzalo Rodriguez are both suspended against Palermo, so the defence has to be reshuffled.

“I have two options in mind. I’m not concerned about my squad, but I am worried that Palermo have a quality attack and an atypical style that is difficult to contrast.

“When I was at Catania, director Lo Monaco said he’d found a forward who was similar to me, but we didn’t sign him as he was too expensive. I do see myself in Dybala and he’s doing great things along with Vazquez.

“We face Palermo aware that we are superior. We have the utmost respect for them, but without alibis for us. We must win at all costs and do it playing our football.”
