The bottom two both had just nine points at the midway stage of the season, so this was practically a play-off at the Stadio Tardini.

“I had asked the lads to continue believing in the dream of safety, to be ambitious and fight game after game,” Coach Di Carlo told Radio Rai.

“I compliment this squad, because they knew how to soak up pressure. They could’ve given up after the equaliser, but instead they kept on believing.

“These are three very important points to start the second half of the season on the right foot. We are improving our fitness levels and the quality of our football.

“Everyone wanted this victory so much today. Now our fans can celebrate for a week along with us, we go home with three points that I hope can prove a turning point psychologically too.”
