Sinisa Mihajlovic apologised to Sampdoria fans after a 5-1 defeat to Torino. “We should all be ashamed.”

The club has already announced it will ‘punish’ the squad by cancelling a day off and instead holding a double training session tomorrow.

“First of all I must apologise to all of our fans for this performance. I am the first person responsible for this spectacle, but my players must also take a long, hard look at themselves.

The club has already announced it will ‘punish’ the squad by cancelling a day off and instead holding a double training session tomorrow.

“First of all I must apologise to all of our fans for this performance. I am the first person responsible for this spectacle, but my players must also take a long, hard look at themselves.

“I was ashamed of this performance. I look back to the words of Boskov, who said it’s better to lose one game 5-1 than five games 1-0.

“I compliment Ventura and his squad, as they absolutely flattened us. If I have to start discussing what my team did wrong, we’d still be here tomorrow…

“Will the punishment help? I don’t know, but I have to do something. I said after the defeat to Lazio that it can happen once, but twice is too many. This was our second time.
“I told my players we all ought to be ashamed of ourselves. Now with two training sessions a day they will have time to talk to each other and understand the situation.

“Tactics weren’t the issue today. With the attitude we had, we could’ve had an extra man and still lost. We have to remember the humility and work ethic that got us to where we are today. When we forget those, we end up embarrassed like this.

“My players haven’t understood that yet, so I’ve got to drum the message into them one way or another. If I can’t do it the nice way, I’ll do it the nasty way.”

Samuel Eto’o made his debut for the final 20 minutes, by which point the game was already lost. Did the media scrum around the ex-Everton striker distract the team?

“I said when Eto’o arrived that one day, sooner or later, he’d be able to play with his full class and experience, but in the meanwhile mustn’t become a distraction. All the media attention on Eto’o could unconsciously have been a distraction, but we have to get used to it, as he’ll be here for 18 months.”
