Vincenzo Montella felt Fiorentina “more than fully deserved” to beat Roma 2-0 in the Coppa Italia quarter-final.

This is the first time Montella has ever beaten Roma as an opposition Coach after three draws and six defeats.

“It was a great performance and I saw a Fiorentina side that was superior to Roma in both halves, so the victory is more than fully deserved,” he told Rai Sport.

“It was a great performance and I saw a Fiorentina side that was superior to Roma in both halves, so the victory is more than fully deserved,” he told Rai Sport.

Mario Gomez bagged a brace, his fourth goal in two Coppa Italia games signalling a return to form, while Alessandro Diamanti is filling Juan Cuadrado’s shoes.

“We expect this from Gomez, as we know he’s lethal inside the box. He doesn’t always have to participate in the build-up, as he is fundamental in the penalty area. Mario needed confidence and has now totally burst through that block.

“Diamanti has real character, even if he is different to Cuadrado. He has immense talent and we have to make the most of it.

“We must have ambition and look forward, but so far we’ve done what we expected to this season. I am proud to be at the helm of this great team, made up of special people.”

While the Viola progress to take on Juventus in the semi-finals, Montella’s old club Roma are in crisis.

“A wobble can happen. In situations like this you do risk defeat, but Roma remain a great squad.”
