Rudi Garcia felt Roma were simply “unlucky” to only get a draw against Verona, but they do “lack consistency.”
This 1-1 was their sixth draw in the last seven games and left them nine points adrift of leaders Juventus.
“We played well in the first half and it was incredible to go into the locker room at 1-1. They scored with half a chance,” he told Sky Sport Italia.
“It’s true we had less patience and made more mistakes in the second half, but with a bit of luck we could’ve won it if Adem Ljajic’s free kick hadn’t hit the bar.
“Don’t forget we played three days ago, so in the final 15 minutes it was normal to feel tired. I asked Seydou Doumbia to stay in the box, but he had little service to get his teeth into. He needs a goal for his confidence.”
Daniele De Rossi was on the bench today, but Garcia was asked whether he should use him in central defence as a deep-lying play-maker.
“I saw no need in the first half for a more technical player to start moves from the back. What can I say on the goal we conceded? It was their only chance!
“We’re in an unlucky moment, but the lads proved in the first half that when we move the ball around quickly then we can trouble any opponent.
“We were too hasty after the break and made more errors, allowing Verona some counter-attacks. We lacked sharpness and got the final ball wrong. If we don’t make the most of our scoring opportunities, it invites opponents to clam up.
“We need to find solutions for our lack of consistency, as we struggle to play at the same tempo throughout 90 minutes.”
Francesco Totti seemed very irritable when substituted today, but Garcia rejected questions on his state of mind.
“I hope that a player is never happy when he comes off, as he always wants to play. Please don’t look for problems where there aren’t any, thank you.”
