Zdenek Zeman said Cagliari proved “we can play like this,” even if they fumbled the lead to draw with Empoli.

The Sardinians had one point from the previous six rounds and were 37 seconds away from winning on his comeback for the sacked Gianfranco Zola.

However, Matias Vecino had other ideas and snatched a heart-breaking 1-1 draw for Empoli.

“We played well in the first half and also used up a lot of energy. Under the rain and with the wind blowing against us after the break, we struggled more, even though Empoli had few chances,” Zeman told Sky Sport Italia.

“I believe in safety and the first half performance is something to build on. We are lacking something in terms of fitness levels and missing several players. Once we are all ready, we can fight it out with anyone.

“We hit the woodwork twice tonight, so that’s football.”

The Sardinians only have 21 points from 27 rounds in Serie A this season, so what is the problem?

“The table doesn’t always reflect the reality of the situation, as many games are decided by tiny moments. I’d love to score a goal that is offside, but I can’t seem to manage it.

“We showed in the first half that we can play like this with hard work.”

Empoli boss Maurizio Sarri impressed Zeman both tonight and in the past.

“Empoli are unbeaten in seven, I voted for him as Coach of the Year because I think he deserves it, plus we’re both smokers.”
