Pippo Inzaghi said this was “the Milan I like” after beating Cagliari 3-1 to “start a new season.”
The fans were on strike for this game, leaving the Curva empty save for insulting banners, and even at the final whistle jeered the squad.
“I am happy for the team, as in recent games we earned a lot less than we deserved. I was convinced that repeating the performance against Fiorentina we could get back to winning ways,” he told Sky Sport Italia.
“The side seemed a little lost in the opening 10 minutes, but in the end we could’ve scored quite a few more goals, so there are regrets.
“I feel we started a new season in Florence, are getting some players back to fitness and moving forward.
“I know that I have to prove myself, as Milan looked to a young Coach in a difficult moment. I see clubs with a strong squad and very experienced tacticians who are still struggling.
“I knew full well that it wouldn’t be easy, but I want to see a Milan side that is higher up the standings. We did well until January, then for a series of reasons we lost our way, but we’re back to creating seven or eight clear-cut chances per game. That’s the Milan I like.
“We are not in the position we want to be, but I feel the team and club are close to me, we communicate regularly and that is enough for me. I have a contract.
“It’s only natural for our fans to be disappointed, so we have to win them back with good performances and results. We’ve seen the Milan of a few months ago and that’s what we can build on.”
Inzaghi has returned to the 4-3-3 system after numerous tactical experiments.
“I knew this was the best system and it’s also my favourite. I tried to change because I lost so many important players and wanted to use Menez up front. Now he is adapting to play wide and it’s working well.
“It is important that players always know where their teammates are on the pitch. I saw the team training well and hoped they would enjoy this evening.”
Adriano Galliani said before kick-off that Inzaghi would only stay at Milan next season based on the results to the end of this campaign.
“I am very pleased with these words, as I feel this faith in me every day. Obviously we hoped to do better, but the club takes into account the numerous injuries we suffered this season. We still should’ve done better with our squad.
“We have to play like this, get results and then the club will decide. If they don’t kick me out, then I’ll stay at Milan for life!”
