The two attackers are Brazilian and Argentinian respectively, by birth, but have been included in Antonio Conte’s Italy squad, with Roberto Mancini criticising their inclusion.

However, the President of the FIGC has defended the move, pointing out that oriundi [non-Italians of Italian heritage] have starred for the Azzurri before.

“Anyone with Italian citizenship can play for the national team,” Tavecchio told reporters after a meeting of Serie A clubs.

“The matter is closed. With an oriundo [Mauro Camoranesi] we won the 2006 World Cup, and Conte has absolute freedom to identify who can play.”
