The Partenopei crashed out of the Coppa Italia at the hands of Lazio last night, and have fallen to sixth in Serie A, making qualification for the Champions League difficult.

It was reported earlier today that President Aurelio De Laurentiis had already decided not to renew Benitez’s contract, and Sportmediaset is now claiming that Luciano Spalletti has been offered the position.

The former Roma Coach is a free agent after being sacked from Zenit St Petersburg, although he is receiving the salary for the remainder of his contract with the Russian side.

However, that deal expires at the end of the season and the news outlet claims that De Laurentiis has offered a two-year deal worth €3.5m per season, around the same terms as his Zenit deal.

An option for another year would be included in the prospective deal, with Spalletti beating off competition from Sampdoria’s Sinisa Mihajlovic and Fiorentina’s Vincenzo Montella.
