Palermo forward Paulo Dybala reveals Italy CT Antonio Conte approached him to play for the Azzurri.
The 21-year-old is eligible to play for Italy and Poland through his ancestry, though he was born and grew up in Argentina.
“There was the chance to play for Italy,” Dybala revealed in an interview with Canal Plus.
“Conte sounded me out, but I’ve said many times that I feel Argentinian.”
Dybala will leave Palermo at the end of the season, and the player discussed his future, indicating he prefers Barcelona to Real Madrid.
“If the President [Maurizio Zamparini] says I’ve to leave, then I want to enjoy these last few games as a Palermo player, I want to do my best.
“I went to Barcelona to watch the latest Clasico, it’s a city I like a lot, and they play very nice football.
“Real Madrid? Because of all the champions they have in their squad, it’s beautiful to watch them play. They’re the best club in the world, in terms of the number of phenomenal players they can call upon.
“When I was a child I preferred Barcelona, because they had more Argentines. Then, of course, there’s [Lionel] Messi who is an idol in Argentina.”
