Vincenzo Montella said Fiorentina are fired up and have “learned” from previous setbacks as they host Dynamo Kiev.

The first leg of the Europa League quarter-final ended 1-1 in Ukraine, though the Viola have already been eliminated after positive away results in Europe and the Coppa Italia.

“All experiences are useful to learn. We had this away draw, which is worth very little, as we must play with our characteristics,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“All experiences are useful to learn. We had this away draw, which is worth very little, as we must play with our characteristics,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“Dynamo Kiev are a very physical side, so we must do well on both a technical and physical level.”

Khouma Babacar is out for the rest of the season, while Alberto Gilardino is not on the UEFA list.

“It’s a shame for Babacar. He was a valuable resource for the team, but you can’t do anything about a sprain.

“Mario Gomez works hard for the team, we expect many goals from him, but he is always taking part in the game.

“David Pizarro has trained and is in good shape, but I have to evaluate whether he can be in the starting XI. I have to take into account that we could end up going to extra time.”

Fiorentina have failed to convert all four of their Serie A penalties this season, so if it goes to a shoot-out, who will step up?

“You said Ale Diamanti should’ve taken one and that was saved too! We have penalty takers and Gonzalo Rodriguez is one of them.”

Diamanti saw his saved in the 1-0 defeat to Verona on Monday night, which dampened their hopes of qualifying for a major tournament next season.

“I think the situation will fire us up, as we have a very determined and united squad. In the Coppa Italia we faced a Juventus side that is dominating Italian football, so it was not guaranteed we’d progress.

“In the Europa League we eliminated the likes of Tottenham and with the injuries inevitably the three tournaments meant we lost something in Serie A. I think we’ve done great work this season.

“Our performance against Verona was one of total domination throughout the 90 minutes – the statistics show it – but we lost on a counter-attack and that transformed the evaluation of the game.

“I do not accept this team being jeered, because the squad has given so much and in this case the criticism was completely unfair. It really irritates me when I see the players attacked unfairly.

“The more I think about it, the more I realise the side didn’t deserve to be jeered on Monday and it is firing me up. I wanted to play straight away after that defeat.

“Tomorrow we will need to feel the passion of the fans in good times and bad, because there will inevitably be mistakes, and I’d like to see the crowd behind us all the way.

“This is a second leg, so we need the utmost concentration and focus. This is a team that generally does not control games well, so can give great last-minute victories and also as we saw on Monday falter at the last minute.”

Montella was asked whether his future would depend on progress in the Europa League.

“I want to stay in Florence and the moment I feel no longer able or willing to coach Fiorentina, the club will be the first to know.

“I am a Coach because I feel a physical need to work. As soon as I feel I’m unable to give Fiorentina that something more, then I will step aside.”

It was pointed out to him that tomorrow will be his 200th game as a Coach.

“I didn’t know that! I guess I can’t keep talking about my lack of experience then…”
