“Me, my wife, and my son Romeo went for a day out. We got to the checkout and paid, without noticing that there was a pack of dried beef and a jar of honey in the bag.

“I don’t know how it happened, I was completely oblivious.

“We were put in handcuffs, like you’d do with a terrorist in certain cases. Obviously I was in disbelief, not just because of that, but because I had no idea what was going on and why.

“I didn’t yet realise the ‘error’.

“They asked for my identification, but I didn’t have them [the documents] with me, I’d left them at home.

“They took us to the police station, where they kept us up past half past 10 at night, irrespective of the need of a two-and-a-half-year-old child.

“He has rhythms, schedules and should have had some baby food made up, but instead he couldn’t eat. It’s absurd to treat a child this way.

“I was primarily concerned about my wife and Romeo, who had nothing to do with it, the error was entirely mine.

“But their presence was also good, as I felt their support, I felt the presence of Deborah who is my rock.

“The police confirmed that I had acted in good faith, and two days later the case was closed.”
