Garcia: 'Roma wasted an hour'

Rudi Garcia blasted his Roma players for a 2-1 defeat to Milan. “We wasted an hour. They haven’t realised the situation.”

The Giallorossi only recaptured second place from Lazio last week and could well lose it again, as the Aquile face Inter tomorrow night, while Napoli could close to within two points.

After two consecutive victories, they capitulated 2-1 at San Siro against a Milan side that had nothing to play for.

“The problem was I saw my players complaining to the referee because they wanted an extra 30 seconds of stoppages. The truth is we wasted a whole hour of the match,” Coach Garcia told Sky Sport Italia.

“We started well for the first 10-15 minutes and hit the post, but after that we dropped into too slow a tempo for a game this important.

“I have to make the squad react somehow, as they perhaps haven’t realised that we only have three games left and need to get the results now.

“How will I make them understand? That’s for me and the squad to know.”

Mattia Destro scored against his parent club, so did it hurt to see him find the net for Milan?

“No, these things happen when a player is up against his old club or his future club. In France this hardly ever happens, but it does regularly in Italy.

“I am pleased for Mattia. Unfortunately we conceded by losing the ball in midfield where we really shouldn’t have done. We knew Milan were strong on the counter and made it easier for them.

“This defeat is entirely our fault.”

Francesco Totti was dropped for the third game running, but this time Roma improved after he came on and he converted the penalty.

“Hindsight is 20/20, but it’s true that Totti and Manuel Iturbe did well after coming off the bench. With them on the field we created more, played better and scored a goal too.

“Mistakes from an individual can happen, even if we have players with the quality to keep the ball a lot better than they do. Instead they give the ball away and make life difficult for the rest of the team.

“The squad doesn’t seem to understand that if we drop the tempo and don’t show the right hunger for this final strait, we make it easier for our opponents.

“We need to play at a higher tempo to even think about getting points in the next three games.

“We also allowed Milan to attack down the flanks with their full-backs and it was another thing we should’ve done better on.”
