Genoa are officially out of Europe after withdrawing their UEFA licence appeal, so Sampdoria enter the Europa League.
The Grifone finished sixth in the Serie A table, so should have gone into the Europa League along with Fiorentina and Napoli.
However, the paperwork was filed incorrectly last month and the club failed to register a valid stadium for their home games, as the Stadio Luigi Ferraris is not up to code.
Genoa had several appeals rejected and today their lawyer Mattia Grassani announced he was withdrawing the final appeal to the CONI (Italian Olympic Committee).
“Out of a sense of responsibility and respect towards the institutions, considering the insistence of the FIGC and very rigorous rules surrounding the UEFA licence, we withdrew our appeal.”
At this point, the next team down in the table will get the Europa League spot that had been Genoa’s.
That side is Sampdoria, their city rivals, who got around the stadium problem by registering Sassuolo’s Mapei Stadium in Reggio Emilia as their ‘home’ arena.
