The defender started for the injured Giorgio Chiellini in the 3-1 Champions League Final in Berlin.

“We knew their quality, we put everything we had on to the field and Barcelona deserve credit for the talent at their disposal,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“We have our heads held high, though losing a Final is always tough to swallow. It is difficult to analyse the game right now. We didn’t start well, but told ourselves we had to stay in it, which we did by equalising and for about 10 minutes really scared Barcelona.

“Ultimately their quality made the difference. Nobody likes losing, so it’s hard to accept.”

Has this experience somewhat spoilt the Olympiastadion, where Barzagli won the 2006 World Cup with Italy?

“No, the World Cup Final will remain forever. I was hoping for another dream, it didn’t happen, but we have our heads held high.

“We reached the Final, which doesn’t happen often. Barcelona won four in 10 years and hopefully we can do that too!

“It takes experience, you need to go one round at a time and the club is growing, so we all want to get back to playing another Final as soon as possible.”

Barzagli was asked which of the Barcelona trident attack he was most impressed with: Leo Messi, Luis Suarez or Neymar?

“All three have quality. Speaking to the others too, we think these three are among the top five in the world. Of course Messi is a big step above the rest and he proved that again tonight.”
