The 27-year-old Sampdoria full-back was stretchered off in agony during the first half of the 1-1 draw, valid for Euro 2016 qualifying.

His right knee was sprained badly during a crucial block on Mateo Kovacic and there were immediately fears of a serious injury.

These were confirmed following tests in Rome’s Villa Stuart clinic, showing a lesion of the anterior cruciate ligament and the external meniscus.

De Silvestri will go under the knife on Sunday.

It’s not clear how long he will be out for, but the period of recovery is expected to be at least six to eight months.
