Italy’s new 4-3-3 formation impressed Ciro Immobile and he hopes to start against Portugal on Tuesday.

The Azzurri drew 1-1 with Croatia in Friday’s Euro 2016 qualifier and will face Portugal in a Geneva friendly.

“It’s the last game of the season and we want to end the year well. It’s important because we are unbeaten under Antonio Conte and want to maintain that record,” said Immobile in a Press conference.

They scrapped the 3-5-2 and unveiled a 4-3-3 system in Split, which Conte hinted will be used more in future.

“Conte did well to see what Serie A has to offer and the resources the Nazionale can rely on right now. We have many talented wide attacking players and fortunately Stephan El Shaarawy has recovered too.

“We’ve had Lorenzo Insigne, while Nicola Sansone plays 4-3-3 at Sassuolo. Eusebio Di Francesco used to come and watch Zdenek Zeman’s training sessions at Pescara, so of course I am familiar with the tactic.

“Conte realised that he had the players suited to this system and the team immediately settled into it, even though we haven’t had much time to practice. It was a great performance against Croatia.

“It’s only natural to feel more confident after that game. It’s important to have more than one system at our disposal.

“The problem when facing a side like Malta or Azerbaijan is that they clam up and we get irritable. It’s not an issue of mentality for us, as the Coach treats it the same way whether we’re playing Brazil or Malta.”
