Palermo forward Franco Vazquez is enjoying Italy’s new shape. “I can cut in and shoot with my left foot.”

Antonio Conte debuted the 4-3-3 system in the 1-1 draw with Croatia and will use it again for Tuesday’s friendly with Portugal.

“In training I was tested out on the right of the 4-3-3. I really like that position, as it means I can cut in and shoot with my favoured left foot,” said Vazquez in a Press conference.

“In training I was tested out on the right of the 4-3-3. I really like that position, as it means I can cut in and shoot with my favoured left foot,” said Vazquez in a Press conference.

“At the start of my career I played closer to the goal, between the lines or behind the opposition midfielders. I liked that position, then at Palermo (Coach Beppe) Iachini moved me to support striker and here I am in the Nazionale. I’m grateful to him.

“It is wonderful to train here with all these champions. I know that sooner or later my moment will come, so I have to be ready.”

Vazquez made his Italy debut in the March friendly draw with England and is eligible thanks to his Italian roots.

“My mother was born in Padua and her whole family, other than my grandmother, still live in the Veneto region.

“Italy has always been part of my family and whenever possible we’d come to visit our relatives. It was expensive, flying from Argentina.

“Wearing the Azzurri jersey, one with so much history attached to it, makes me very proud.”
