Catania: ‘Games fixed, but…’

Catania have released a statement confirming Antonino Pulvirenti tried to fix matches, but insist it ‘didn’t have any real effect’.

The Elefanti have been implicated in the ‘Goal Trains’ scandal, and face demotion to the Lega Pro for next season.

“Mr Antonino Pulvirenti, who a few days ago resigned from all corporate postions with Catania Calcio, today clarified his position during a long hearing in front of the investigating judge,” a statement from lawyer Fabio Lattanzi explained, posted on the club's official website.

“Mr Pulvirenti admitted he had contact with other parties in order to influence the outcome of several matches, and he did this in order to save Catania from relegation.

“However, he expressed the belief, especially in the light of the reading of the documents, that those contacts did not have any real effect on the matches in question.”

Catania won four of the five matches investigated, drawing the other.
