Italy “want to defend our image in the world, above all with Antonio Conte,” said FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio.
There were question marks over the Coach after he was named as one of 104 people recommended for trial in a new match-fixing case.
A judge will now view evidence in a preliminary hearing before deciding who should be charged for a full trial.
“I think the prestige we have in the world is not reflected by 17th place in the FIFA rankings,” Tavecchio told reporters in Rome today.
“There are other interests that enter into play and Italy’s image isn’t liked by many. However, we want to defend our image in the world, above all with Antonio Conte.”
Tavecchio also revealed Italy are bidding to host the 2019 European Under-21 Championship.
“We are owed something…”
The Peninsula has applied to host several tournaments in recent years, but was always turned down.
