Catania to appeal demotion

Catania have announced they will appeal against their demotion to Lega Pro in a match-fixing case.

Elfanti President Antonino Pulvirenti has admitted to attempting to fix five matches in last season’s Serie B, ironically to save his club from relegation.

The punishment was handed down this morning, with the court accepting the recommendation of FIGC prosecutor Stefano Palazzi that the club be demoted to the third tier.

However, the ruling went even further than the recommended sanctions, with Catania being deducted 12 points, rather than the five Palazzi had requested.

“With regard today’s decision by the national federal court, Calcio Catania announces that it will present an appeal to the federal appeals court, as established by the federal regulations in force,” the Sicilian club announced on its official website.
