Jordi Alba said Barcelona won’t miss Gerard Pique and they cannot underestimate Roma in the Champions League.

It kicks off at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT) and is the opening tie in Group E.

“So far no club has been able to win the Champions League two years in a row. That is extra motivation for us,” said Alba in a Press conference.

“The club always wants to win everything, but that mustn’t become an obsession. It’s difficult to repeat the Treble this year.”

Pique misses out, but his teammate assures “we have faith in all the centre-backs in our squad. Pique is a leader and has been here for many years, so he knows the club perfectly. It’s an honour to have him as a teammate.

Barcelona already swept Roma aside this summer in the Gamper Trophy, while the Giallorossi arguably never recovered from the 7-1 Champions League mauling by Bayern Munich.

“That was a presentation friendly and has nothing to do with tomorrow’s match. Roma will have different motivation, are playing in front of their fans and we must try to impose our style of football on the game.

“I doubt the Bayern Munich match will affect them, as it’s in the past now. Barcelona also suffered painful defeats only to get back on our feet. That’s football. The past is in the past.”
