Stefano Pioli concedes Lazio “didn’t know what to do” when facing nine-man Saint-Etienne in the Europa League.

The Aquile went a goal down after six minutes, then fought back and were aided by a controversial red card, eventually winning 3-2.

“When against nine men, we didn’t know what to do, unsure whether to attack for a fourth goal or defend the result. We should’ve showed more determination going for another goal. That drop in concentration levels should not happen.

“We need to control situations better. On their second goal we allowed a one-against-one and this should not happen either.

“I am happy to be in Europe, even though the Champions League play-off defeat to Bayer Leverkusen was hard to swallow.

“We are not the favourites to win the Europa League, but we do want to prove we’re competitive on three fronts.”
