Rudi Garcia assures he never felt in doubt as Roma swept Palermo aside 4-2 and defended Gervinho from critics.

The Coach had been under pressure following a 3-2 midweek defeat to BATE Borisov in the Champions League.

“The first half followed on from our second half performance against Borisov,” Garcia told Mediaset Premium.

“It’s a shame that we conceded the first goal that way, as it was our fault and we gave them the opportunity. I compliment the lads, as winning away from home is never easy.

“Of course, I hope we won’t always need four goals to win. I had no doubts the side would react, as it always showed great things. Now we have to prove that we can play an entire game well, as we did against Juventus and Barcelona.

“There’s the break for international duty and we are still working on getting the summer arrivals fully settled.”

Gervinho bagged a brace, meaning he has scored in each of his last three competitive games, but Garcia stood up for the oft-criticised Ivorian.

“When he doesn’t play well, he doesn’t play. It’s absolute bull to say that he plays because of favouritism. When he’s in this shape, he can really help the team.

“It wasn’t just him today, as the whole side did well in the first half, playing the ball with great quality. After the restart we tried to control the game a little too early.

“I hope we can learn from the errors of the past and always start matches with this level of intensity.”

There had been reports Garcia was on the chopping block following that BATE Borisov debacle.

“I have always been relaxed. There is good football, the mentality is right and we always battle. We always fight to the 95th minute, but perhaps ought to start about five minutes earlier!

“I take responsibility for the first half in Borisov, but the lads have faith in me and we can do well. I like this squad and we can do great things together if we are united.”
