Reja: 'Red card ruined the game'

Atalanta Coach Edy Reja felt a red card after five minutes “ruined the game” in their 3-0 defeat to Fiorentina.

Gabriel Paletta was sent off for a penalty incident – although the foul appeared to be more Alejandro Gomez’s fault – and it was downhill from there.

“It was difficult to do well when down to 10 men for basically the entire match, but even then we created a couple of scoring opportunities that we didn’t make the most of,” Reja told Rai Sport.

“The penalty for Fiorentina was understandable, but it wasn’t so obvious a chance as to warrant a red card. With Paletta sent off, it ruined the game.

“I would’ve liked to see Atalanta play Fiorentina in an even situation. Maybe we could’ve caused them some problems. It’s a shame, as with 11 against 11 we would’ve seen a more open and entertaining match.

“The lads gave everything and didn’t give up until the last minute. I still compliment my squad, but there are regrets we never really got to play Fiorentina properly.”

The Viola are now two points clear at the top of the Serie A table. Can they really fight for the Scudetto?
“They have various options and Paulo Sousa made seven changes from Thursday’s Europa League game. Consequently, he has an extraordinary squad at his disposal. They are to be considered for the top spots this season.”
