Italy team manager Gabriele Oriali believes there are not enough Italians being given a chance in Serie A.
Antonio Conte’s latest Azzurri squad saw a number of players plying their trade abroad named, including Graziano Pelle of Southampton, Sebastian Giovinco of Toronto FC and Monaco’s Stephan El Shaarawy.
“The problem isn’t following players abroad, but finding those who play in Italian football,” Oriali explained to Radio Anch'io Sport.
“This weekend we watched six games, and we counted 10 Italian players, in the Champions League too we’ve found that there aren’t that many Italians.
“The problem isn’t the players abroad, because we have a network that monitors them. The problem for us comes from within. It’s not easy, football is going through a delicate moment.
“There are a lot of high-level young players, and great prospects. When [Simone] Zaza was first called-up, it caused havoc as he was a semi-unknown, then he showed he deserved it.
“Insigne is the same, had he not been injured. Last year he was out for a long time with injury, we were in Naples for the match against Juventus, and when we saw him go off with injury we weren’t happy.
“He has great technical qualities, and he’s one of the few who can beat a man and create an advantage.”
