A row has erupted after Palermo refused to release Oscar Hiljemark and Robin Quaison to Sweden.

The players had been called up for international duty to replace Marcus Berg and Jimmy Durmaz, who both sustained injuries against Lichtenstein.

Palermo blocked their departure, pointing out that the call came well beyond the FIFA deadline.

Hiljemark and Quaison had been given advance notice, which was then cancelled by Sweden before the injuries.

The Scandinavians did not take this news well, particularly ex-Cagliari midfielder Albin Ekdal.

“The two lads would’ve left straight away to join us. I do not understand Palermo’s behaviour, as this is an egotistical gesture that penalises the players.

“Mind you, I’m not surprised either, as everyone in Italy knows what (Palermo President Maurizio) Zamparini is like.”
