“In my view, Higuain is the best centre-forward in Italy right now and in Europe he’s in the top three,” Kalinic told La Nazione newspaper.

“It won’t be easy, but I hope Higuain has trouble this Sunday. My admiration remains for him, but I want to win the personal duel.

“My manager did say that Napoli were interested in me, but the negotiations with Fiorentina had already started and I couldn’t wait to sign. The Viola called my agent, he told me of this chance to play in Italy and I started pushing, because I didn’t want to miss this opportunity.”

Kalinic bagged a hat-trick in the 4-1 victory away to Inter, so can he be Fiorentina’s new Gabriel Batistuta?

“We are talking about a world class striker, so I know what he achieved and I am very proud with the comparison, but I don’t want it to be a weight on me.

“One day I hope to have become a very good striker simply because I was myself.

“Everyone who knows me says I’m a realist. I know we can fight to keep hold of the top spot in Serie A. I also know that more difficult moments will come along. This is football.”
