The Serie A new boys were 1-0 up when Lorenzo Lollo got himself sent off after 38 minutes and Bologna eventually squeezed a 2-1 victory in stoppages.

“I am sorry for the lads, because they put in an extraordinary performance,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“Before the red card, we were the only team playing, then the attitude changed. Until the last second we were there on level terms, ready to earn a great point against a side with important players.

“I am disappointed that the people of Carpi jeered instead of applauding these lads for their efforts. We have a very arduous task to keep this side in Serie A.

“I arrived as a new Coach and what happened before no longer matters. What counts is going on to that pitch, reaching our objective and staying in the top flight.

“If the fans have to attack someone, let them attack me. Time will tell who was right.”
