Sampdoria President Massimo Ferrero has backed FIGC head Carlo Tavecchio over controversial remarks.

Tapes of the President of the Italian football federation making anti-semitic and homophobic remarks were released at the weekend, drawing widespread condemnation.

However, the Blucerchiati patron has backed Tavecchio, with reference to a controversy of his own, when he described Inter’s Indonesian owner Erick Thohir as “that Filipino”.

“I don’t know what President Tavecchio said, and I haven’t heard it since I was abroad,” Ferrero admitted in an interview with ANSA.

“But what I will say is that one swallow does not make a summer, so we can’t disregard the great job he’s done so far because of a sentence.

“I, for example, was condemned for calling a man ‘Filipino’ instead of Indonesian, which is nearby, but you journalists want to blow it out of proportion.”
