The striker impressed against Atalanta, but then ran out of steam as the 0-0 draw wore on.

“I have an excellent rapport with the Coach,” the 20-year-old told Sky Sport Italia.

“He makes me work hard and we got on from the first day we met. He can help me in many different ways. Milan really needed a Coach like Mihajlovic.”

Niang was prolific during his six-month loan spell at Genoa, then fractured his foot in pre-season and was only now able to make his first start.

“Gian Piero Gasperini helped me a great deal, I got to play consistently at Genoa and it’s what I needed. I grew up there and it was a very useful experience.

“I prefer to play as a centre-forward, while going wide I prefer the left to the right flank. I can play anywhere, but the decision is all down to the Coach.

“I gave everything I had, I knew that I couldn’t last 90 minutes and it’s a shame I couldn’t do more tonight. Serie A is difficult and Atalanta put in a great performance. We picked up a point that could eventually prove to be precious.”

Much of the credit for the result goes to 16-year-old goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

“We know his quality and he really rescued us tonight. He’ll have a great career.”
