Gigi Buffon names the best goalkeepers of his era, including Iker Casillas, Peter Schmeichel and Petr Cech.
The Juventus number one made his professional debut 20 years ago today, and discussed his peers with Marca.
“The best goalkeeper of my era has been Casillas,” Buffon explained.
“He’s always been the best with his hands. People always say [Lev] Yashin, [Ricardo] Zamora, [Dino] Zoff, [Sepp] Maier and [Gordon] Banks.
“If I had to select those of my era, I’d say Schmeichel, [Walter] Zenga, [Gianluca] Pagliuca, [Andoni] Zubizzareta.
“In the last decade, Cech and Casillas have been the best, while in the last three I’d say [Manuel] Neuer, he’s fantastic in the air. The Czech though [Cech] is the most complete overall.”
The most-capped Italian international of all-time was also asked about the best Spanish strikers he’s faced.
“The best was definitely Raul, with [Fernando] Torres a close second. Even [Ismael] Urzaiz was very strong for a time.”
Finally, the legendary shot-stopper explained what makes him most angry in football.
“When I make a good save and the striker taps in the rebound unmarked I go into a rage!”
