Coppa: Cagliari conquer Sassuolo

Sassuolo are the latest Serie A side out of the Coppa Italia, going down 1-0 to Cagliari.

Bologna went out to Pavia in the third round, with Chievo eliminated by Salernitana at the same stage and Vicenzo defeating Empoli.

Yesterday, Palermo were shocked by Alessandria at home, much the dismay of club President Maurizio Zamparini.

The Neroverdi started with a reasonably strong side, with Domenico Berardi and Antonio Floro Flores both playing from the first whistle.

The Sardinian side boasted a strong forward line of their own, with Alberto Cerri leading the line, supported by Marco Sau and Diego Farias, the former making his 100th appearance for the club.

Floro Flores should have broken the deadlock on 21 minutes, but the striker’s effort missed the target.

Sassuolo would be made to pay with less than 10 minutes to go until half-time. Sou marked his century in the best possible way, calmly slotting beyond Gianluca Pegolo for the opener.

Cerri could have made it two on 42 minutes, but the big forward failed to connect with Diego Farias’ cross into the box.

The on-loan Juventus forward had another chance to make it 2-0 five minutes after the break, but failed to convert after being set-up by Antonio Balzano.

Sassuolo reacted by making a host of changes, and Diego Falcinelli went close with an hour on the clock.

With six minutes left to play, substitute Gregoire Defrel’s fierce drive was heading toward the corner, but Alessio Cragno got across for a fantastic save.

There were five minutes of time added on at the end, but the Neroverdi couldn’t find a way through, and crash out of the competition.

Cagliari will face a trip to San Siro in the Last 16, as they'll be taking on Inter.
