Gigi Del Neri believes Verona “are motivated, ready to run and fight” despite their 1-0 home defeat to Empoli.

His Serie A debut on the Hellas bench saw a key performance from Empoli goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski before Andrea Costa found the net.

“The performance was of a good level against a team that plays very well and we had several scoring opportunities,” Del Neri told Rai Sport.

“It can happen. The important thing is that the team is now motivated, ready to run and fight. We want to grow and allow our opponents very few chances to hurt us, that is the aim.

“I am sure the squad has important qualities and will fight for safety to the end. I was impressed with the tactical work my players did closing down the spaces, though we didn’t do it enough.

“I will not talk about bad luck so much as an off day, but in terms of football Verona dominated Empoli.”
