The Round of 16 has been full of shocks, as Lega Pro outfit Alessandria eliminated Genoa, Serie B side Spezia knocked Roma out on penalties and Carpi stunned the Viola 1-0.

“Playing in the format with a one-off game helps the ‘worse’ teams, as over 180 minutes it would be much more difficult,” Coach Castori told reporters.

“I expected a great reaction from my players after the 3-0 defeat to Empoli. After the first half, Fiorentina didn’t cause us that many problems and we were able to bring home the victory.

“It’s not easy for Fiorentina to play with the same focus against us as they did with Juventus. The fact they used many of their first choice players gives even more credit to our success.”

Carpi will face Milan or Sampdoria in the quarter-finals.
