“We won 16 games out of 23, scored 53 goals and conceded 15,” said Sarri in his Press conference.

“Our forward scored 43 goals between them, so I cannot help but be satisfied, these are extraordinary numbers.

“However, I must not look back. We always want to improve and if we get even better numbers then we’re tough to deal with. I tell the fans to relax and we hope to contribute to a Happy Christmas.

“We’ve won seven of our last nine games, so I don’t see why people keep asking about the one defeat to Bologna.

“Tomorrow we’ll be facing an Atalanta side that in terms of home form are one of the best in Serie A. It’s very difficult and there is also an historic rivalry between these sides, but we go there knowing we can do well.”

Sarri was asked about Scudetto ambitions, but continued to pour cold water over these comments.

“Dreams are the fuel of motivation, but then you have to remember there is the reality of a very tough tournament. Our ambitions at the moment are not entirely clear, we’ll see what our journey allows us to target. We started this new journey five months ago and are already doing better than we expected.

Juventus have won four titles in a row and are one of the top clubs in Europe. Inter are the queen of the transfer market, so it seems obvious to me they should be the favourites for the Scudetto.

“We have a different path to take. Historically Napoli always had a lot of potential and went through ups and downs, so we must always be wary and focused. Tomorrow’s game with Atalanta will tell us if this team is consistently hungry. We have to seek results now, not consider how it might affect our standings in six months.

“If this team improves its attacking statistics, it becomes like a tank. However, if that means reducing the balance of the side, I’m not sure it’d be worth it.”

Napoli’s ambitions could also be affected by purchases in the January transfer window.

“That depends on what the President wants to get out of this team. I discussed it briefly with the directors, but I am not a Coach who is good at buying players. I focus on improving the ones I have. Otherwise I’d have become a director of sport instead!”
