Former Coach Leonardo tells Milan how to rebuild and has advice for Jose Mourinho. “Football has changed.”

He was a player, director and tactician for the Rossoneri, so knows the club inside out.

“For the past two or three years Milan have been going through a process of transformation. They are renewing and working to become great again,” he told calciomercato.com.

“Not just Milan, but all Serie A sides need to focus on long-term plans, work on the line-up and create structured sides that can be competitive both immediately and in the future. That means a focus on scouting.

“I am not surprised that Serie A is so entertaining and balanced this season. Juventus found themselves after a difficult start, Roma are going through a tricky time and will recover, while Napoli play good football.

“Then there’s Inter and Fiorentina, who seem to be the most consistent.

“The market has changed and what happened at Inter is proof of that. Massimo Moratti sold around 70 per cent of his shares to Erick Thohir and that was a courageous choice. He put Inter in a condition to make the step up and have a new opportunity.

“I am very fond of Moratti, he is in history and it’s difficult to think of an Inter without him. Everything he has done was always for the good of Inter.”

Jose Mourinho won the Treble with the Nerazzurri in 2010, but has just parted company with Chelsea.

“Mourinho changed the way of being a Coach. He wrote history,” continued Leonardo.

“On the one side Pep Guardiola and his tactical reading changed things, but on the other Mou focused on involving the fans and the team, on characters and the symbiosis between manager and locker room.

“I think he is realising that football has changed and the beliefs he had 10 years ago are perhaps no longer valid. I am certain he’ll be able to renew his ideas and return stronger than ever.”
