With 11 goals to his name, the striker is second only to Napoli's Gonzalo Higuain (16) for this year's position as Serie A top scorer, but he is also the only player among the top eight not to belong to a big club,

His remarkable state of form attracted the interest of several teams, not least Inter.

“There was an interest, yes, but nothing came of it,” Eder told Il Corriere dello Sport. “I always held that my priority was renewing with Sampdoria, because I'm happy in the city of Genoa.

“Before leaving for my summer holidays in Brazil I told President [Massimo] Ferrero that I'd have been happy to stay if he made an effort when extending my contract.

“He didn't pull back from that and I'm grateful. I'm happy with Ferrero.

“I won't deny it's flattering to be sought after by a team like Inter. I've lived in Italy for the past ten years, I know the history of the Nerazzurri and what they won.

“But I'm grateful to Sampdoria. This club gave me so much. I'll decide my future together with the directors here.

“I see the rumours are starting again about my transfer to Inter, but my agent hasn't told me anything on the subject, and I don't know how things will turn out because on the transfer market anything can happen. But I'll say this again: I'm happy at Sampdoria.

“I was told about the interest by [Chinese club] Jiangsu Suning and I said no thanks. I did the same once with a substantial offer that came from Qatar.

“I need to play in a beautiful and prestigious championship like the Italian one more than I need to make money. I'm still young to think of leaving. We'll see about the future. But Samp are my top club.”

The 29-year-old then went on to discuss the subject of the Azzurri, for whom he looks poised to start at Euro 2016.

“Our draw is tough, but we can go far because, as [Coach Antonio] Conte always says, our group is united, we know what we want and we follow the Coach. In France we'll play on an equal footing against everyone.

“Conte is an incredible worker. He prepares games down to the last detail, he leaves nothing to chance. He's a great Coach with a real winner's mentality.

“Conte allowed me to join the Azzurri, and he impressed me from the very first day.

“I have no regrets about not being there for [the World Cup in] Brazil 2014. For me, every call-up by Conte is an honour and I'll always give 100 per cent for the Azzurri shirt.

“I started off the year well and I want to keep this up so I can reach some results with Sampdoria and, God willing, with Italy. Winning the Euros would be the highest possible result.”
